Identity politics is a term used to refer to the political actions, events, and discourse that centres the experiences of those historically marginalised, such as those rooted in gender, religious, racial, and other social identities. It is a tool to build solidarity among members of specific communities as they engage in collective action that challenges oppressive systems and state power. Identity politics is a means of recognizing and validating the collective political experiences of those that share a common identity, and which has been used to systematically deny them access to equal opportunities and resources. It is an important tool for the transformation of established power hierarchies and for the construction of alternative forms of collective identity.
